Duke Environmental Hall serves as the new home to Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and officially opened to faculty and staff on April 10, 2014. The building itself contains both private and open offices, multiple classrooms, an auditorium, conference rooms and an art gallery. Many of these rooms feature as-cast exposed concrete elements as a final building finish.

This building was designed and constructed to meet and exceed the criteria for LEED Green Building platinum certification. Lithko’s scope of work included recycling all of our waste construction debris, utilizing water-based form release agents and creating concrete mix designs that minimized the use of new materials and maximized the use of recycled pozzolans. Our team had to research a plan in advance for these issues, including developing tracking methods to ensure the goals for sustainability were met for this project. Since its opening, the Duke Environmental Hall project has won the top prize in the Green Project category by ENR Southeast magazine.
