Courtyard by Marriott Parking Garage
The new Courtyard Marriott in Aurora, CO is a 139-unit facility, that includes a parking garage next to the light rail station on Abilene. Lithko’s scope included foundations, slab on grade, slab on deck, columns and walls. The deck is an 8” post tensioned structural slab with a broom finish. For the form systems, our team chose Meva Imperial for the wall forms, Meva STB 450 for the one-sided wall support frame and Alshor SK for the deck shoring.
A unique form liner called, “Fitzgerald Graylsitc Random Plank” was selected for the parking garage walls. It is an elastomeric urethane form liner bonded to 3/4” plywood weighing approximately 23 lbs. per square foot and it can be used up to 100 times. We had the form liner panels built in 48” x 168” sections that weigh close to 1,300 lbs. each. They were designed to be placed vertically into the wall, but due to the owner’s revision, the design was changed to place the panels horizontally. The pattern has small planks with varying depths and square edges, creating consolidation issues with the horizontal placement. As a result, extra care was put into the mix design, placement and vibration.
Some other challenges included logistics due to the parallel hotel construction and the close proximity of the property line of the RTD Light Rail Station to the parking garage. Subsequently, our team has had to work within the city requirements, including designated work days/times and background checks for employees working in that area. Our team did a good job by looking ahead daily and carefully coordinating/staging our materials on this small worksite with limited laydown space.
