Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Garage

Healthcare

When it was built, this addition was the USA’s largest pediatric hospital expansion ever undertaken. It added 750,000 square feet of clinical space, a groundbreaking research facility, underground parking and a LEED-certified central energy plant, not to mention brought expansive community revitalization to the surrounding neighborhood. Nationwide Children’s Hospital now has 508 beds and logs over 18,000 admissions annually.

This project was adjacent to the existing hospital, so we had to be careful not to interrupt hospital operations. There were tunnels underneath the site, necessitating substantial coordination with the earthwork contractor. The structural slab had a high FF/FL tolerance specification, which required extra procedures. Part of the project was conducted during January and February, requiring sophisticated cold weather measures. Extra planning and safety precautions were required to keep the teams safe and project on schedule due to winter conditions. Lithko was able to satisfactorily complete the project ahead of schedule.
