OU Medical Adult Bed Tower
Oklahoma University Medical Center is adding a Patient Bed Tower to its’ level one trauma center. Lithko Oklahoma City BURG’s scope included an eight-story, 378,200 square foot addition to the existing hospital comprised of 32 OR’s, 148 patient beds, and 4 elevator cores. The 4th floor includes 30 transfer beams.
Our team overcame many challenges while working against an existing active hospital while on a tight jobsite with limited laydown space. To accommodate the core wall panels, we developed a unique method for storage. We built A-frames, which allowed the panels to be vertically stacked until they were flown into place. This provided enough space for the pump trucks to easily navigate the site and kept the panels close to the crane, reducing crane time.
We utilized 3-D modeling when encasing and integrating the reinforcing steel into a cantilevered truss structure. This helped match the bar connection to the steel by mechanical couplers.
Close and frequent coordination with other subcontractors and suppliers was crucial to success on this project. We worked jointly with the steel erector on our pour sequence to allow concrete construction to continue, while limiting impact to the overall schedule. We collaborated with the rebar fabricator and ironworkers to sequence the rebar deliveries in order to install up to 25 tons per day. This included just in time deliveries and unique splice/layout requirements.
Our team did a great job keeping up with the 215 tons of rebar changes, based upon engineering design changes after construction commenced. From November 2018 to September 2019, we placed 25,800 cubic yards of concrete. The building topped out on November 6th, 2019! Great job to the Oklahoma City team!
